Book Review: The Formula

Title: The Formula: How Rogues, Geniuses, and Speed Freaks Reengineered F1 into the World’s Fastest-Growing Sport
Author: Joshua Robinson and Jonathan Clegg
Genre: Sports, Non-fiction, Business

What It’s About: It goes over the start of Formula 1โ€“itโ€™s beginnings being brought by individuals who came out of WWII and their love for all things fast. Then how it was kept together for many years by Bernie Ecclestone and his lawyer-friend, but the teams struggled to stay afloat, and the way Bernie did things, it was unclear what kind of relationships he had with others, or where you stood with him in terms of hosting F1 races, for which the countries/ localities had to pay. Eventually, Bernie brought in CVC capital and they kept him around to help run it, but once they felt ready to sell off the business and get a return on their investment, they brought in Liberty Media, which in turn made F1 into what we know today.

My Thoughts: There are some items in this book that do not seem to be factually correct, and at times, it feels like there are gaps in the storyโ€”I would have loved for the book to go into more details and be a bit more chronological in order so I could learn more about it. I am sure that it would have turned out to be a much larger book as a result. Ultimately, I really enjoyed it and found so many fascinating details in this book about F1 that I didnโ€™t really enjoy. For a new fan of F1 or even Drive to Survive, it gives enough of a taste of the sport without going into too much detail and overwhelming the fansโ€”both new and old.
